850 Lord Nelson Update

Lord Nelson is currently at the NRM where it has undergone thorough examination. The cab and firebox cladding have been removed to allow access but have all now been restored.  No broken or leaking stays were found and thus hydraulic and steam tests are to take place at the NRM in due course.

If this proves successful, test running should take place on a preserved railway, Lord Nelson will then under go high speed testing of up to 60mph on the Great Central Railway. If all goes well, some trips on the York Scarborough runs could then take place in the summer.

ERPS Board of Directors

Three new directors were elected by ballot after ERPS’ AGM.  However, due to issues beyond ERPS’ control, all three have resigned from the board and membership of ERPS.  The main character that has been lost is Jesse Moody who was Chief Mechanical Engineer for the Lord Nelson project.

The board is now actively seeking nominations for replacing the short lived directors.  ERPS will move on and continue to support 828 and 850 should it be returned to their custody.  Negotiations continue with the NRM.

31st October 2007 - Nominations For Directorship

Those who attended the AGM on the 31st October were made aware that 6 nominees were put forward to stand on the ERPS board of directors. Unfortunately only 5 of the 6 candidates were viable to stand for directorship. Full members will be informed of the nominees via post and are being urged to return to voting slips back to the ERPS secretary as soon as possible once received.

10th October 2007 - NRM Press Release for E850 Lord Nelson

At a meeting held in Eastleigh on Monday 17th September, Eastleigh Railway Preservation Society and the National Railway Museum agreed a plan of action for Lord Nelson following the withdrawal of the locomotive from main line service last month.

The locomotive was taken out of service with the discovery of two rows of broken stays adjacent to the crown.

A thorough investigation into the cause of the problem will be carried out, including an examination of the paperwork and historic records, followed by a physical inspection of the boiler itself in order to assess what will be required to get the locomotive back into service.

As this is likely to take some months, the partners have agreed that the locomotive should move to the National Railway Museum in York, where it can be seen by the public, whilst the necessary research is taking place.

Godfrey Olson, Chair of ERPS said “It is unfortunate that the locomotive has had to be taken out of service, and we are anxious to make sure that we get to the cause of the problem, before we treat the symptoms.  There is a lot to be done we are working closely with the NRM to progress to the best out-come that can be achieved”

Helen Ashby, Head of Knowledge & Collections at the NRM said, “It is important that we ensure the safety of the public and of this important national icon.  It will take some time to carry out all the research that is needed to find out what has happened and how we can repair it.  In the meantime, at least the locomotive will be able to be seen by the public on display in York”.
